National FCCLA speaks to Pres Bush at Summit for School Violence
National FCCLA President speaks up at White House Summit on Preventing School Violence.
Michael Wade Smith, a Goodland (Kan.) High School student, had the president´s ear Tuesday when he proclaimed that the student organization he leads offers students a chance to sharpen their skills in leadership and ethics. Smith´s comment came at a summit on school safety called by President Bush in response to recent school violence. His chance to speak up came when a woman in the audience said she couldn´t believe there wasn´t a program in the schools that taught young people about leadership, ethics and character. "I took that opportunity to jump in," Smith said. "I stood and just said, ´I would like to speak to that.´ " The president, who was facilitating the discussion, allowed him to do so, and Smith told the crowd that students could learn those traits through the organization he leads -- the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
