The goal of this provider initiative from FCCLA and PeaceJam is to provide teachers, administrators and schools in Minnesota with a process for presenting, increasing, and evaluating character development as the students, youth leaders, classrooms, schools study the work of a Nobel Peace Laureate. The partnership provides youth-led models of project based learning, peer education that are contemporary, dynamic, and engage youth in contextual learning. All partners in this effort will serve in an advisory capacity which will include planning, goal setting and general oversight of the initiative. The project would involve curriculum for teachers in elementary, middle and secondary levels, youth leadership initiatives, lead teacher training, youth leadership training and youth involvement in school assemblies planning. High School youth would be involved as youth leaders who would be peer educators for younger grades, and through the lead teachers’ efforts to train teachers who work with all grades, and through assemblies and extracurricular groups and in school projects. Nobel Laurettes such as Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Aung San Suu Kyi, Betty Williams, Adolf Perez Esquivito, Oscar Arias, Jody Williams, Sir Joseph Potblat, Rigoberta Manchu Tu, Shirin Ebadi, Mairiad Corrigan Maguire, Jose Ramos Horta would be studied. Service, character and leadership are components of this interactive youth-leadership model of providing character education. The goal of PeaceJam is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves, and the world.
