Moderator Jason DeRusha from WCCO TV put FCCLAīs STOP the Violence Panel on his website Blog. The panel of Holly Pardue, Joy Rikala and Patty Wetterling spoke and interacted with the 180 youth leaders, advsiors and chaperones in a fascinating discussion of the issue of school violence.
WCCO TV REPORTER Jason DeRusha Said: Itīs been a long day for me. And itīs only 2:30pm! This morning, I moderated a panel discussion on school violence for Minnesotaīs FCCLA Chapter. FCCLA is the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. It used to be FHA, Future Homemakers of America, but thatīs not politically correct anymore. It was a fascinating group: Patty Wetterling, Holly Pardue (a former student at Columbine High School), and Joy Rikala (Minnetonka police chief). I found Holly particularly interesting. She talked about how students have the power to make choices to intervene... to step up and stand up to bullies. She never could have imagined watching the news that night and finding out one of her friends had died. I talked about covering these shootings. I covered the shooting at ROCORI High School in 2003 and Red Lake earlier this year. If anything good comes out of the horror-- itīs that young people are more empowered to speak up. The kids with FCCLA are from all over the state, it was a great event. And worth being up at 7:30am for!
